While the Terminator movies and the Avatar franchise don’t seem to have a lot in common at first glance, the two series secretly share one type of unusual inspiration. Director James Cameron’s career has been widely varied, but the auteur’s work has returned to a handful of themes repeatedly. From Aliens to the Terminator movies to the Avatar series, Cameron’s movies often touch on a recurring thematic preoccupation with man disrupting nature’s delicate balance via overly ambitious scientific experimentation. Ironically, many of Cameron’s movies are also obsessed with showcasing slick, hyper-modern military technology.
